Winter Care

All summer bulbs need to be lifted from the ground and stored over winter as they cannot withstand freezing temperatures. Tuberous begonias are best dug up before the first fall frost. Others should remain in the ground until the foliage is blackened by frost. Be careful when digging not to cut or damage the roots, corms, tubers or bulbs.

After digging up bulbs, wash off as much soil as possible with a gentle spray of water, and dry them in a sunny spot for several days. Store bulbs in a dark, dry area at 40 to 50°F. A good method of storage is in dry sphagnum peat moss in a plastic bag.

Check the bulbs often to make sure they are in good condition. If they have started to grow, they need a cooler spot. If they have started to rot, allow the packing material to dry out somewhat.
